The Project
Cairo 360 is an award winning online magazine which serves as the definitive guide to living in Africa’s biggest capital – Cairo. The site is aimed at Cairenes and carries reviews and features of all the latest venues Cairo has to offer from restaurants and nightspots to art galleries and shopping. Cairo 360 also provides a comprehensive guide to events, and cinema listings, as well as ideas for travelling on weekends and a complete guide to home entertainment including DVD’s, music, and books. Within 3 months of launch, Cairo 360 became the leading guide to Cairo, and the number 1 local English language site in Egypt.
Bright Creations involvement
Media Republic required something which hadn’t been done in Egypt before, and wanted a software provider which had experience developing new ideas, high quality designs and a simple and easy to use interface to update content on the website. Bright Creations was brought in to manage the whole software project, from requirements analysis through to deployment. We designed the complete website making it easy on the eye, interactive and able to manage such a huge repository of rich content.
We then began building a custom content management system built from scratch. The power of the content management system is the key to ensuring the Cairo 360 editorial team find it easy to manage and update their content on the system. As opposed to using off the shelf open source Content Management Systems, our custom system allows advanced functionality to manage the stage of the editorial process flow – from writing the content through to it being reviewed and published on the site – helping manage any online magazine’s requirements. In addition, the custom system includes roles within the system to ensure that each team member only has access to what was relevant to them.
Since its launch in March 2010, we have a dedicated team involved with supporting the application, upgrading the system, integrating new functionality into the website such as the Facebook Like Button, Social Bookmarks, improved search functionality and User Comments. Our work with Cairo 360 does not end there, Cairo 360 has huge plans to add functionality and Bright Creations is dedicated to ensuring we meet their expectations and those of its rapidly expanding users.
